Polonnaruwa is a city that was founded in the 11th century and belongs to the so-called. Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka. For three centuries the city was the main royal town. These are the remains of ancient palaces and sprawling gardens which are UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is still in very good condition and is one of the most visited places on the island. Very interesting is the monument Gal Vihara, which is considered the pinnacle Sinhalese sculpture. It’s a group of four statues carved from a single piece of rock showing Buddha in different positions. Another interesting sights is Rankota vihara, which is the bigest dagoba in Pollonaruwa and measured 54 meters. The whole tour you can go by foot or from the comfort of the car. However, we recommend to rent a bike and enjoy a tour a little differently.
